From battling the Karni Sena goons to battling the CBFC for certification, the film has fought long and hard to get a theatrical release.
But even after it finally hit theatres, troubles for Padmaavat are far from over with many people thrashing it for being regressive and glorifying the unfortunate practice of Jauhar.
Echoing the same sentiment, actor Swara Bhaskar wrote an open letter to Bhansali, expressing her opinion after watching the film but sadly, was trolled and slut-shamed by folks on Twitter, including many film-industry personalities.
The newest jibe at Swara, however, comes from the film’s lead actress, Deepika Padukone.
While Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, and Bhansali adopted a more indirect approach while commenting on Swara Bhaskar’s open letter, Deepika has taken a direct dig in her recent interview.
Speaking to India Today, Deepika talked about the controversial Jauhar scene in the film and mentioned that maybe Swara missed the disclaimer while she was busy buying popcorn.
She (Swara) probably missed the disclaimer at the beginning of the film. You probably went out to buy some popcorn and missed the initial disclaimers that come out. I think, secondly, the fact that it is important to view a film in totality and to see in which period it was set in. Third of all, I think for me this film is not just about the act (Jauhar) that they all committed, but it stood for so much more. For me, it’s a celebration of women and their strength, power, and dignity.
Do you agree with Deepika Padukone let us know!
