Whenever one writes a story, a song or a quote, there is always an inspiration behind it that makes it possible. You might have heard about Bollywood films that have drawn inspiration from Hollywood films, real-life stories, and incidents. Well, there are books too that have inspired films. TLJ brings to you Hindi films you might not know are based on books.

Earth

The Namesake

It is based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel The Namesake, which was earlier published as a novella. Helmed by Mira Nair, and starring Tabu and Irrfan Khan, the movie received a great response from American critics.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun

Remembered as the purest and most innocent love stories of all times, the film, which stars Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit, is inspired by Kohbar ki Shart by Keshav Prasad Mishra. It is one of the highest grossing Hindi films of the 1990s.

Saawariya

The film, which marked the debut of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor in Bollywood, is based on short story White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky. This was the first Bollywood film to be released in Blu ray disc, but unfortunately, it clashed with SRK’s Om Shanti Om, and flopped at the box office.

The Blue Umbrella

Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film is adapted from a novel of the same name written by Ruskin Bond. With main leads Pankaj Kapur and Shreya Sharma, the movie performed decently at the box office.

Omkara

7 Khoon Maaf

The movie directed by Vishal Bhardwaj is based on the short story, Susanna’s Seven Husbands by Ruskin Bond. Priyanka Chopra played the lead role in the movie. Reviewed negatively by critics, the film couldn’t survive for long on big screens.

Aisha

Directed by Rajshree Ojha, the film is based on the novel Emma by Jane Austen. With lead actors Abhay Deol and Sonam Kapoor, the movie failed to generate sufficient interest in the public.

Bareilly Ki Barfi


One of the most loved films of 2017, the film is inspired by French novel, Ingredients of Love by Nicolas Barreau. Director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari changed the setting from France to Uttar Pradesh.
