The Rewrite Circle: Of Mothers, Migration, and Middle age

Chandigarh News : By Ishrat Singh

Contemporary stories about immigration often focus on building a life abroad or the loneliness that follows. The Rewrite Circle by Archana R Singh fills a gap in literature by turning its attention to the families left behind. A fictional novel exploring the life of five middle aged women in India from diverse backgrounds, the journey becomes one of self-exploration rather than an examination of their children’s lives.

The story begins by tracing the foundational years of the five protagonists, allowing readers to understand who they are before the central narrative unfolds. This fragmented structure continues throughout the novel. While some readers may find the pattern immersive, others may struggle to stay connected across five parallel trajectories.

However, an aspect of the writing style that makes it a book you cannot stay away from is the impressive visualisation and honesty. A line from page 100, paragraph 2 reads, “Sheena sat cross-legged on the barstool sipping kombucha and pretending to enjoy it”. The description reveals the character, creates a visual in the reader’s mind while the humour is subtle and contextual.

The novel can be broken down into sub-themes but at its core, it is a recalibration of middle age. Singh’s greatest strength is restraint. She does not sensationalise loneliness, nor does she romanticise sacrifice. Instead, she writes with the observational patience of someone familiar with the rhythms of Indian family life: the coded conversations, the emotional diplomacy between parents and children, the quiet attempts to appear stronger than one feels.

Each woman in the story occupies a distinct social and psychological space, yet their experiences echo one another in subtle ways. The result is a narrative that feels collective without losing intimacy. Singh also deserves credit for resisting simplistic binaries. The younger generation’s migration is neither condemned nor glorified; it is treated as a complicated inevitability shaped by aspiration, economics, and changing definitions of home.

This is not a loud or structurally experimental debut, but it is an assured and compassionate one that ends on a note of rediscovery, not emotional coping. The Rewrite Circle succeeds because it understands that some of life’s deepest ruptures do not arrive through catastrophe, but through gradual geographical and emotional drift.
