Screen time is increasing and health is deteriorating. From work to entertainment, communication we spend countless hours scrolling daily be it on Excessive Screen Time, smartphones, tablets, or televisions. It is safe to say our physical capabilities are limited far and beyond, to the extent of being a cyborg! While these devices offer convenience and connectivity, prolonged screen exposure can take a toll on our eyes. With increasing concerns about digital eye strain and other related issues, it’s essential to prioritize screen time and eye care to safeguard our vision. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to protect your eyes in the digital age:

Understanding Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, is a common condition caused by prolonged use of digital devices. Symptoms include eye strain, dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and neck and shoulder pain. The blue light emitted by screens, along with factors like poor lighting, glare, and improper viewing distances, contribute to these symptoms.

Use Proper Eyewear

For individuals who spend significant time in front of screens, wearing appropriate eyewear can provide additional protection. Prescription glasses with anti-reflective coatings or specialized lenses designed to filter blue light can help reduce eye strain and discomfort associated with prolonged screen time. Consult an eye care professional to determine the most suitable eyewear for your needs.

Adjust Screen Settings

Optimize your device’s settings to reduce eye strain. Adjust the brightness and contrast levels to a comfortable setting, and enable features like night mode or blue light filters, which reduce the amount of blue light emitted by the screen. These adjustments can minimize eye strain and improve overall viewing comfort.

Maintain Proper Screen Distance and Position

Maintain an appropriate distance between your eyes and the screen to reduce eye strain. For computers, position the screen about an arm’s length away and ensure it is at eye level or slightly below. Additionally, avoid glare from overhead lighting or windows by adjusting the screen angle or using anti-glare filters.

Ensure Proper Lighting

Proper lighting is crucial for reducing eye strain. Avoid harsh overhead lighting and position your screen to minimize glare and reflections. Use task lighting to illuminate your workspace adequately without causing glare on the screen. Dimming surrounding lights can also help reduce the contrast between the screen and the surrounding environment.

Hydrate Your Eyes

Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining healthy eyes. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dry eyes, which can be exacerbated by prolonged screen time. Consider using lubricating eye drops to alleviate dryness and discomfort, especially if you spend extended periods in front of screens.

Practice the 20-20-20 Rule

One effective way to reduce digital eye strain is by practicing the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes of screen time, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This simple habit helps relax the eye muscles and prevents them from becoming fatigued.

Visit an Eye Care Professional

Regular eye exams are essential for maintaining optimal eye health, especially for individuals who spend significant time in front of screens. Schedule regular eye check-ups with an eye care professional to monitor your vision and address any concerns related to digital eye strain or other eye conditions.
