Success is not measured by what you accomplish but by the obstacles you overcome, which is Booker T Washington’s most famous quote. Children of today’s generation must know the struggle behind every significant achievement. “I Am Kalam” – the 2011 Indian Hindi language drama film produced by the non-governmental and charitable- Smile Foundation and directed by Nila Madhab Panda, depicts the name of one of the most famous presidents of India- Dr APJ Kalam.
Dr Kalam plays the major role in the name of, an inspiration for a boy who works at a tea stall and is referred to as Chhotu.
Here is a conversation with ace Director Nila Madhab Panda.

Why is “I am Kalam” a must-watch?
“I Am Kalam” is a film made to portray a strong social message. I have toured the world and found that child labourers work in agriculture, such as farming, livestock herding, and tanning. Nearly half of the child labourers work under hazardous conditions. India is reported to have the highest number of child labourers, according to UNICEF. These children have a right to dream and live a decent life.

Please tell us what you think about the Chhotus, the underprivileged kids we encounter in our lives, in our canteens, at construction sites and in retail shops.
While travelling by train to Pune, I met a Chhotu who wanted to become President. And I thought, why not? Every little child, whether he belongs to the labour class or is the child of an IAS officer, has the right to dream and achieve what he wants. These Chhotus possess a huge suitcase of talent. Every Chhotu has the right to give wings to their dreams. Child labour is wrong because it can result in extreme mental and bodily harm and even death. It can lead to slavery or economic exploitation. And in nearly every case, it cuts children off from schooling and health care, restricting their fundamental rights.

What is it about President Kalam that inspires Chhotu?
President Kalam is a highly inspirational person. He earned the charming “People’s President” nickname during his five-year tenure! He was a great inspiration for children. Spinning magic with words, Dr Kalam taught children to look for miracles even in unlikely places. At heart, he was a child himself. Throughout his life, he awakened a curiosity and love for the world in children and youth. Tomorrow will be decided by what we do today, according to President APJ Kalam. He always highlighted “karma” over destiny.

Irrespective of their problems, how do these Chhotus manage to remain happy?
Despite being poor, the chhotus do not have any complaints about life because they are innocent and have learnt how to accept their lot.

What is it about President Kalam that inspires Chhotu?
Chhotu, the bright yet impoverished Rajasthani boy, dreams of getting an education while working at a roadside Cafe. When he hears an inspirational message from President Kalam, he changes his name to Kalam and commits to studying whenever he can. Dr. Kalam genuinely believed in the transformative power of education and the immense potential of India’s youth, inspiring them to pursue their dreams and fly high.
Demonstrating that equality in education is still a mere thought, this stellar movie is undoubtedly an eye-opener for India’s education sector.
