Cate Blanchett and other’s stand up against inequality faced by women at The Cannes Film Festival

Hollywood star Cate Blanchett who was the president of the Cannes Film Festival jury, led a historic women’s march up the stairs of the iconic Palais des Festivals theatre to promote equality for women at the French Riviera.

The demonstration included well-known personalities of Hollywood including Salma Hayek, Kristin Stewart, Jane Fonda, Marion Cotillard, Lea Seydoux, Ava DuVernay, Patty Jenkins, Sofia Boutella and several film directors and industry executives.

“As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these stairs today as a symbol of our determination and commitment to progress. We will demand that our workplaces be diverse and equitable so that they can best reflect the world in which we actually live – a world that allows all of us behind and in front of the camera to thrive shoulder to shoulder with our male colleagues. We acknowledge all of the women and men who are standing for change,” Blanchett said.

Agnes Varda, the legendary French film director of ‘Faces Places’ added, “The stairs of our industry must be accessible to all. Let’s climb.” In all, 82 women were part of this protest. Since the launch of the Cannes Film Festival, only 82 films directed by women have been awarded by an official selection in competition, compared to 1,645 films directed by men, a ratio of less than five per cent. The march up the steps of the Palais was organized by a new movement called 5050 x 2020, which calls for more gender equality and diversity in the French film industry. Film maker Nandita Das and her ‘Manto’ actor Rasika Duggal were also a part of this protest which grabbed India media attention.

Kristin Stewart rebels against the “high-heel” rule

Kristin Stewart, who was attending the premiere of ‘BlackKkKlansman’ revolted against Cannes ‘high-heels only rule’ and marched up the steps bare feet. She came, posed and kicked off her shoes and made a strong political statement at this year Cannes Film Festival.

The Twilight star was applauded for her act of rebel by the Twitterverse. Even last year during a round-table conversation at the event, Stewart had reportedly said, “Things have to change immediately. It’s just like you simply cannot ask me to do something that you are not asking him (to do). I get the black-tie thing, but you should be able to do either version- flats or heels.”

“A mother should never have to choose between feeding her children and buying diapers. Baby2Baby helps new mothers so they don’t have to make that impossible decision, and we can’t think of a better charitable partner for The Honest Company. The Honest Company and Baby2Baby share a joint mission to improve the lives of families everywhere,” added Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein, co-presidents of Baby2Baby.
